THE POWER OF ART IN INTERIOR DESIGN

Art curation, interior design project

Art has an incredible ability to shape and transform an interior. Whether it is a bold statement piece or a subtle, evocative work, an artwork can serve to tie together an interior design scheme, it can set the atmosphere of a space, or act as a gateway to another realm.

Art as a jumping off point

We often use art as the starting point for our interiors, allowing it to guide the overall aesthetic and mood of a space. A well-chosen piece of art can become the focal point of a room, setting the tone for the entire design. Colours from a painting can be pulled into the interior palette—whether by directly matching the hues, opting for softer, muted versions, or choosing complementary tones.

Beyond colour, the texture and form of artworks can also inspire our interior schemes. A heavily textured painting may influence our choice of materials and finishes, from fabrics to flooring to joinery. The forms of an artwork can also be echoed across a space, in furniture, architectural details, or decorative accessories, creating a sense of continuity and balance.

Art as the finishing touch

Selected towards the end of the design process, the right artwork can be the element that brings a space together. A well-chosen painting can unify different aspects of a room, or it can introduce something that was missing - whether it’s vibrancy, depth, or personality - making it feel complete.

We love designing pared-back interiors that act as the perfect backdrop for bold, statement artworks. Muted walls and thoughtfully-designed joinery ensure that the art remains the focal point, allowing its colours and expression to take centre stage.

The selection process might consist of browsing pieces from our favourite artists to choose the perfect pieces, or for larger projects, working with art galleries or consultants to develop a more curated portfolio for the space.

Beyond aesthetics

Art is not just about aesthetics—it has a profound impact on the way we feel within a space. The right piece can evoke nostalgia, create a sense of serenity, or inject energy and vibrancy into a room. This emotional resonance is why we consider art to be one of the most important elements of an interior design scheme.

For those who already have a collection of beloved pieces, integrating existing artwork into a new home can make it feel instantly familiar and personal. This approach ensures that an interior reflects the personality and story of its occupants, creating a space that feels both curated and meaningful.

Thoughtful planning for art display

When working on the space planning of an interior, we carefully consider the placement and display of art, ensuring these details are addressed as early as possible in the design process. This includes carefully-considered lighting—whether a picture light or ceiling spotlight—to showcase the artwork, and choosing a frame that enhances both the piece and its surroundings.

For large art pieces on lightweight walls, we ensure the structure is reinforced during the build process to support the weight, and for heavy sculptures, we carefully evaluate the floor construction to ensure it can safely bear the load.
